Greetings Friends,
Towards the middle of the month, I start to think of a topic that I can write about that will be of interest to our customers and friends. Trending things, stories about Parkerville, things that affect our business and, possibly, you and your business. Therefore, I am going off-topic a bit to talk about the importance of cybersecurity awareness.
Since 2004, October has been designated as Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The reason? Money! In 2021, cybercriminals reaped an estimated $7 billion dollars from cyber theft. For these bad actors, it’s a job that pays very well, with little risk. If we’re not educated about cybercrime and diligent, it’s very easy for any of us to become a victim.
I am painfully aware of the importance of cybersecurity awareness because, over the past few months, the Parkerville team has been working through a significant uptick in phishing emails. Each of the attempts varies in sophistication and all are trying to compromise us and get our money. Although we have gotten through Halloween without these cyber-goblins causing any harm, they’re not going away.
Since this will be a publically available blog, I am not going into any details about what we have experienced, but we’re not alone. We’re personally aware of another local business that lost a large sum of money because they were tricked into changing their direct deposit routing.
Cybercrime impacts us all, in one way or another. With artificial intelligence (AI) evolving, you can bet these crooks will become even more sophisticated and aggressive. Please be aware and take the time to educate yourself. Take advantage of the free information available at CISA. If you are a business owner, be sure you take the time to educate your staff.
With all the challenges of operating a small business, add this into the mix. Never a dull moment as they say. Please be careful. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.
