Greetings Customers & Friends,
Happy New Year to you all. I hope your holidays were restful and enjoyable. 2025 was a great year for Parkerville as we celebrated our 20th anniversary in business. Thank you to all of our loyal customers throughout the years, as well as our hard-working, dedicated staff. We could not be more grateful for our team, customers, and community.
I know many of you buy wood at Parkerville, and we always want you to get the best deal possible. We also want to turn a request for quotes around quickly. It’s straightforward if you come in, pick your own lumber, have us mill it, or if you take it the way it is out of our rack, pay your bill, and walk out the door as a happy customer. It becomes a bit more complicated if you call in and ask us to provide you with a quote for your project and give us a list of sizes you require.
The majority of our stock is purchased random width, and random length. It would be easier if all our stock were D4S or S4S (dressed on 4 sides or surfaced on 4 sides). Then, if you could buy all 1 x 10’s (3/4 x 9 ½) or 1 x 12’s (3/4 x 11 ½), it would be easy to calculate and lay your project out, but that is not how premium hardwood is sold. Remember, random length and random width. To obtain an accurate quote, the ideal circumstance would be for our staff to actually pull the boards to fill the potential order so that we can get an exact tally and price. Unfortunately, that is not practical just to provide a quote. So, the industry standard is to incorporate a “waste factor” into the quote. This waste factor can range from an estimated 15% – 20% up to sometimes 50%. with some species and circumstances. If we miscalculate the waste factor in the wrong direction, we may give you a price that is too high and potentially lose the order. We hate it when that happens. If you place the order, we then pull the lumber and get an exact tally, and that’s what you pay for. It could be slightly more, or slightly less than the estimate, but usually it’s less because we try to protect ourselves from losses and try to avoid going up too much after we provide a quote. We do have customers come in and spend significant time laying out their project by marking each board as to which part they will yield from that piece, thereby minimizing the waste factor. Unfortunately, if we provided that service, our labor would be more costly than the waste factor. If you have a project and want to keep your waste factor to a minimum, you may want to invest the time to select your own material. We’re always here to help.
Parkerville looks forward to 2026 with optimism and excitement. We are busy with a moderate workload and just signed on for a large project at Loomis Chaffe School that starts in 2026 and has a large phase in 2027. We continue to source beautiful lumber from around the world and work towards expanding our products and services to better serve you all.
The entire staff at Parkerville wishes you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year. There are still a few months before we start working in our yards, so it’s time to think about your 2026 projects. We’re always here to help you. Wood is wonderful!
Hope to see you at the shop,
Sincerely,
David Harris, President
