Jatoba: The Rich, Rugged Heart of the Tropics

Few woods turn heads quite like Jatoba. Known commercially as Brazilian Cherry, this South American hardwood delivers a rare combination of exotic beauty, unmatched hardness, and remarkable longevity. Whether it’s glowing underfoot in high-end flooring or anchoring a hand-crafted table, Jatoba brings elegance and toughness in equal measure.

Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril) grows throughout Central and South America, thriving in the warm climates of Brazil, Peru, and the Caribbean. Towering up to 100 feet tall with broad canopies and tough seed pods, the Jatoba tree has long been valued—not just for its timber, but for its resin, traditionally used as a natural adhesive and incense.

Despite its trade name, Jatoba is not related to the cherry tree. The “Brazilian Cherry” moniker likely comes from its deep, reddish tones and smooth texture—but its strength far exceeds that of cherry. Freshly cut Jatoba heartwood often surprises with its orange or salmon-pink hue, but this is just the beginning. With time and exposure to light, it darkens into a rich, reddish-brown that radiates warmth. Darker streaks and interlocked grain create depth and movement across the surface, giving finished pieces a sense of visual texture and fine detail.

Its medium-to-coarse grain and natural luster mean it doesn’t need heavy staining—Jatoba looks spectacular with just a clear finish. The patina deepens naturally over the years, making it a wood that grows more beautiful with age.

If beauty makes you look twice, it’s Jatoba’s performance that seals the deal.

  • Janka hardness rating: 2,350+ lbf — nearly twice as hard as oak
  • Dried Weight: Around 56 lbs/ft³
  • Resistance: Excellent against wear, insects, and rot

This level of toughness makes it a go-to for flooring, stair treads, decking, and cabinetry where daily wear and tear are inevitable. Even in commercial spaces, Jatoba holds up like a champ. It isn’t the easiest partner in the workshop—but it rewards patience and preparation.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Tooling: Use sharp, carbide-tipped blades and bits
  • Machining: Watch for tear-out in interlocked grain
  • Sanding: Can burn if you apply too much pressure
  • Nailing/Drilling: Always pre-drill
  • Gluing: Generally good
  • Finishing: Accepts oil and polyurethane beautifully

As with all tropical hardwoods, responsible sourcing matters. Jatoba is not endangered and isn’t listed on CITES or the IUCN Red List, but increased demand can pressure local ecosystems. Parkerville works closely with reputable dealers to ensure our material is sustainably harvested, to ensure your project supports long-term forest health.

If you’re after a wood that’s as tough as it is beautiful, Jatoba may be your match. It asks more of your tools and your time—but in return, it offers color, character, and strength that will last for decades. For the discerning craftsman or the bold designer, Jatoba delivers a timeless, tropical touch that’s as hard-wearing as it is head-turning.
